Last Friday’s session of the Driving Positive Change (DPC) series brought a fresh perspective to the conversation on scaling social impact. Hosted as part of the Capacity Building to Scale Impact 2024-2025 subseries, the webinar titled “Rethinking Scaling – Pathways Beyond Growth” offered EN members a dynamic forum to explore innovative strategies for empowering social entrepreneurs beyond traditional organizational expansion.

The February 2025 session, led by Kaat Peeters—Manager at Social Innovation Factory (Sociale InnovatieFrabriek)—was designed to challenge conventional growth metrics. Instead of equating scaling solely with organizational expansion, the workshop delved into a variety of strategies that foster systemic change through collaborative and innovative approaches.

Exploring New Pathways for Scaling Impact

Kaat Peeters’ presentation challenged the traditional paradigm of scaling, advocating for a broader, more inclusive approach that focuses on ecosystem-level change. Here are some key insights from the webinar:

1. Beyond Organizational Growth

While expanding organizational capacity remains important, the discussion highlighted that true impact often lies in the ability to foster systemic change. This means:

  • Influencing Policy: Social entrepreneurs can drive change by engaging with policymakers to create supportive regulatory frameworks.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Open-source solutions and collaborative learning can democratize successful models, making them accessible to a wider audience.
  • Replication over Expansion: Instead of scaling up one organization, successful strategies can be replicated across different regions and sectors to maximize reach.

2. The Power of Collaborative Networks

The session underscored the value of building robust networks among social innovators. Peer learning and support can lead to:

  • Innovative Solutions: Collective brainstorming often leads to novel approaches that might not emerge in isolation.
  • Resource Sharing: Collaborating organizations can pool resources and expertise, making it easier to overcome common challenges.
  • Amplified Voice: A united network is more likely to influence policy and drive public discourse on social issues.

3. Strategic Storytelling as a Catalyst for Change

Storytelling was identified as a crucial tool in the social entrepreneur’s arsenal. By crafting compelling narratives, organizations can:

  • Inspire Action: Personal and relatable stories have the power to mobilize communities and attract support.
  • Build Credibility: Effective storytelling can establish an organization’s authority and build trust among stakeholders.
  • Drive Engagement: Narratives that resonate on an emotional level can create lasting connections with audiences, leading to sustained engagement.

Outcomes and Reflections

The session served as a reminder that scaling impact in today’s complex social landscape requires a multifaceted approach—one that blends innovation, collaboration, and strategic communication.

The “Rethinking Scaling – Pathways Beyond Growth” webinar stands as a testament to the evolving nature of social innovation. By shifting focus from mere organizational expansion to a more holistic view of systemic change, EN members are better equipped to drive meaningful, lasting impact in their communities.
