In a recent interview, Regita Zeila, CEO of the Social Entrepreneurship Association of Latvia, shared insights into the organization’s digitalization journey, challenges faced by social enterprises, and the role of technology in supporting social entrepreneurship in Latvia.

The Social Entrepreneurship Association of Latvia

The Social Entrepreneurship Association of Latvia (SEAL) was established in 2015 to develop social entrepreneurship for long-term change. As a non-governmental organization (NGO), SEAL currently employs six people, four of whom are full-time employees. In 2023, its revenue was close to €200,000. While primarily focused on national activities, SEAL is also active internationally through collaborations and projects.

Digitalization Journey and Key Learnings

SEAL has undertaken several digital initiatives, mainly focusing on increasing its digital presence. This has included website improvements, enhancing online visibility, and ensuring website accessibility for all users. One key learning from these initiatives has been the importance of a professional and cohesive digital appearance. Having a well-structured and visually appealing website, along with consistent branding across social media platforms, has helped establish SEAL as a trusted authority in social entrepreneurship in Latvia.

Digital Tools and Their Impact

Latvia, as a country, is highly digitalized, and social enterprises are no exception. Common digital tools used by social enterprises include:

  • Digital Signatures & Internet Banking: Essential for daily operations.
  • E-Invoicing: Mandatory for transactions with governmental institutions.
  • E-Address: Official communication with government agencies.
  • Marketing Tools: Canva for design, ChatGPT for content creation and idea generation.
  • AI and Automation: Used for social media management and content optimization.

Despite the overall high level of digitalization, some challenges remain, particularly for older generations or individuals who struggle with online tools.

Challenges Faced by Social Enterprises

Social enterprises in Latvia operate in diverse industries such as healthcare, education, social care, and support for marginalized communities. The main challenges they face include:

  • Funding: Securing initial and long-term financing remains a significant hurdle.
  • Workforce: Finding qualified employees is an ongoing challenge.
  • Digital Adaptation: While many tools are available, enterprises need guidance on how to select and use them effectively.

Support for Digitalization in Latvia

The Latvian government, supported by EU funds, has introduced strong financial incentives for digitalization:

  • Grants of up to €10,000: Available to enterprises for digital transformation.
  • Test Before Buy Program: Allows businesses to test digital tools before committing to their adoption.

These initiatives ensure that social enterprises have access to necessary digital tools, tailored to their specific needs.

Training Needs for Digitalization

While SEAL recognizes the importance of digital literacy, time constraints make it difficult for organizations to engage in extensive training programs. Practical workshops are more effective, with particular demand for:

  • AI and Data Analytics: How to integrate AI and leverage data for decision-making.
  • Marketing & Design Tools: Advanced Canva techniques and additional marketing tools.

Conclusion

Digitalization plays a crucial role in modernizing social enterprises and increasing their impact. SEAL’s experience highlights the importance of a strong online presence, access to digital tools, and continuous adaptation to new technologies. With financial support from the government and a growing interest in practical digital skills, Latvia’s social enterprises are well-positioned to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
